PaulP's birthday today and I knew he was keen for a sail. Forecast has hinted that today could be windy for about a week so had been keeping an eye on things with a view to an early finish.
It all shaped up according to plan, so finishing at lunchtime and heading to the beach wasn't a shock.
Got down there to find 14 knots cross shore left to right, a classic NE session was on the cards.
With the sunshine there was always the thought that we might get a bit more wind come through, known around Ho'ove as the 'Damart effect' I believe.
Anyway, forecast was for wind to increase during the afternoon regardless of thermal undergarment preferences, so ..... time to get rigged up.
I went for the 6.3m Ego and pulled out the 10'5 from the van. The plan was to drop onto Freewave 104 if it filled in consistently, or just have a laugh on the 10'5.
First one out, and typically the wind had dropped a touch. Never mind, it was nice sunny day, so sailed upwind off the plane in preparation for the tide turning and the associated conveyor belt effect west.
Was a bit disappointing, but there were some gusts threatening to cause fun, and sure enough after a few runs, the wind kicked back in, and the doubters joined myself and Charlie on the water.
Had a fun 3 hours or so on the water, and even switched onto the Freewave for a run, but despite planing okay on it, staying upwind was proper hard work, so that was quickly returned to the van and the 10'5 re-employed.
There were 5 of us out from the car park, plus another from Rosetti I spotted. Also a couple of kiters were seen enjoying the summer like conditions.
For lightweights, it would have been 5.2m weather for sure, but I was never really overpowered on the 6.3m.
Maybe I should have gone for the Ray 125 and 7.3m Ram to give Paul a run for his money as he blasted like a dole boy racing to cash his giro and claim a consignment of special brew for his birthday celebrations.
Joking (piss taking) aside, he was flying, and he was smiling a lot for someone who'd just gotten a whole year older. Happy birthday big fella ..... and have fun at Bewl !!
